The short answer is no, you cannot anchor or moor just anywhere. Most cities and towns have restrictions on permanent mooring locations, and some restrict anchoring. And not every spot is safe or ideal to leave your boat unattended for long
how do i apply for a mooring permit to install a new mooring?
If you want to install a new mooring you must engage an Authorised Mooring Contractor to assess the site; provide proposed GPS coordinates for the installation; and determine mooring tackle specifications for your nominated vessel at your proposed location. There is a process to then follow for Parks Victoria to approve this, we can provide this information to you.
can i transfer my mooring permit to another party?
In mooring grounds where Waiting Lists do not operate, permits for moorings may be transferred to a person of your preference. There is a process to follow for Parks Victoria to approve this and we can provide this information to you.
do i need my mooring tackle inspected on a regular basis?
All mooring tackle must be inspected by an Authorised Mooring Contractor every 12 months. The Mooring Report from the inspection must be submitted to Parks Victoria and state that the mooring meets specifications and is in safe and serviceable condition
can i use my own buoy on my mooring?
It’s worth noting that many regulated mooring grounds in Port Phillip are required to have a Standard Identification Buoy fitted as part of their mooring. We can advise you on these locations, and your alternatives depending on your mooring location
what do i do if i change my boat but still want to use my mooring?
If you want to request a change to the vessel you originally nominated on your permit, an application form can be completed and submitted to Parks Victoria for approval. We can guide you on this process
can i make an alteration to my mooring design or location?
This is possible but this must be done by applying to Parks Victoria and we recommend seeking the advice of your contractor to discuss prior to doing this
if i’m not using my mooring anymore, can i relinquish my mooring permit?
Yes, you can and this is done by completing and submitting the relevant form to Parks Victoria that we can direct you to. Before you decide to do this, contact us so we can advise you if it may be saleable rather than removing it.
